Description

The LOCOMOTIVE Project was one of the projects within the Esprit II programme of the European Union.

The aim of this project was to design, develop and test a low cost vision system for recognition of symbol clusters on moving objects in slightly controlled environments, running in real time.

The developed demostrator was a pilot system for the automatic identification, from the road side, of the passing vehicle plate number. To achieve the real time operation, it was necessary to develop two specific hardware subsystems on which the computer vision software could be run. These subsystems were:

• A sensor subsystem, composed by a high resolution CCD camera supplemented with a number of digital capabilities.

• A processing hardware subsystem, based on a low cost and versatil transputer T8xx network.
