Volumetric video: challenges to go mainstream

On April 2nd at 12:00, Room B-221.

With the rise of virtual and augmented reality, there is a need for more content creation tools. Volumetric video could be the technology that helps to close this content gap, not only for professionals with dense camera setups but also for anyone with a camera. Even though most of the research in this field is focused on the 3D reconstruction stage, there are other interesting areas which still need to be improved before the technology goes mainstream. In this seminar, we talked about Volograms progress making this technology affordable and some of the key research areas that have high growth potential.

Rafael Pagés is Volograms’ Co-founder & CEO. Before co-founding Volograms, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin where he conducted his main research in free-viewpoint and volumetric video, 3D reconstruction and computer vision. He received the Ph.D. in Communication Systems degree in 2016, M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), where he was a researcher working at Grupo de Tratamiento de Imágenes. In 2011, he founded and led another startup where he gained experience with telepresence, 3D reconstruction and volumetric video.
