8K 120-Hz Real-Time Video Codec

On June 11th at 12:00, Room B-221.

This presentation introduced the world’s first 8K 120-Hz the high efficiency video coding (HEVC)/H.265 real-time video codec that complies with an 8K broadcasting standard in Japan and presents validation results of its processing performance, image quality, and transmission experiment. In real-time high-frame-rate 8K 120-Hz video encoding and decoding, both high-speed processing and high-image-quality encoding are necessary. The encoder parallel processes videos with 12 4K 60-Hz encoders (4 and 3 partitions in the spatial and temporal directions, respectively) after it analyzes down-converted 4K input videos. Regarding the decoder, the video and audio decoding functions were implemented using highly parallelized software. Via the validation, we confirmed that this codec achieves high-image-quality at a low bit rate of approximately 100 Mbps, which is equivalent to the bit rate of 8K 60-Hz broadcasting, and a stable transmission at a high bit rate up to 400 Mbps.

Yasuko Sugito is currently with NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) Science and Technology Research Laboratories,Tokyo, Japan, researching video compression algorithms and image processing on 8K. Her current research interests focus on image quality assessment for high frame rate (HFR) 8K 120-Hz videos and high dynamic range (HDR) images.
