Human Factors are the Key for Effective Design of XR-based Training

On Monday, May 12, the Grupo de Tratamiento de Imágenes hosted the seventh seminar in its Speaking in the Key of Science series at the ETSI Telecomunicación (UPM). The session, titled “Human Factors are the Key for Effective Design of XR-based Training,” was led by Sara Buonocore, researcher at the University of Naples Federico II.

In her talk, Sara challenged traditional narratives around the underperformance of certain XR-based training initiatives and proposed a new approach focused on human factors. Drawing on empirical studies, she emphasized that the design of XR experiences must take into account cognitive diversity, professional background, and technological familiarity in order to achieve truly effective outcomes.

Among the topics discussed, Buonocore examined the reasons why many XR training programs fail to meet expectations, highlighting the need to rethink current approaches. She pointed out how individual differences—such as cognitive diversity, work experience, and digital literacy—have a significant impact on user perception and satisfaction. Based on these insights, she proposed key strategies for designing more inclusive and effective training programs that align both with learner profiles and educational goals.

The seminar sparked an engaging discussion among attendees, reinforcing the role of this series as a key forum for scientific dialogue around technological and educational innovation.
