  UNDERGROUND ("METRO")
Madrid's underground, called "Metro", is the quickest, cheapest and easiest way to move around the city. The Metro network (the map we mirror in our server was valid as of May 2007) has 13 colour-coded lines and around 250 stations clearly indicated by the red, blue and white logo shown above. Although a few stations have special opening hours, the vast majority of them operate from 06:00 till 01:30. When Metro is closed (i.e., 01:30-06:00), there are special (and not completely reliable) bus lines that replicate on the surface most of Metro's underground lines.

Fares: see next section, "EMT BUS".

  EMT BUS ("AUTOBÚS")

The "EMT" (Empresa Municipal de Transportes - City Council Transport Company) has around 200 bus lines that connect all of Madrid from 06:00 to 23:30. There is also a night service called "Búho" (owl), which operates from 23:30 till 06:00 but it only has a few radial lines "emanating" from a single point (Plaza de La Cibeles).

Metro/bus fares as of May 2007 for zone "A", which covers all of "the usual Madrid", including its airport (1,00 € extra fee): a single trip ticket costs 1,00 € and can be purchased at the entrance of Metro stations and on the busses, but in many cases a much preferable option is the "MetroBus", which costs only 6,40 € and is valid for ten single trips, and can be shared by two or more people. Note that there are no free Metro/bus or bus/bus or bus/Metro connections: a "single trip", in the case of Metro, is whatever journey (within zone "A") without leaving the Metro premises; and in the case of EMT, whatever journey (id.) without leaving the initial bus.

METROBUS

MetroBus can be bought in the entrance of any Metro station (either at the human-attended counter or at the automatic machines), or in most press kiosks, or in estancos (tobacco and mail stamps shops), but not on a bus.

The Spanish formula for requesting this ticket is: "Por favor, un billete de diez viajes" or "Por favor, un MetroBus".

TOURIST TRAVEL PASS

The Tourist Travel Pass is a personalized transport pass, which entitles the holder to make an unlimited number of trips, using the public transport system operating within a chosen zone, with the indicated exceptions.

Tourist Travel Pass CouponTo use the pass, its holder must carry a ticket with the valid zone and time period. The ticket must also contain the passenger identification number (from Identification Card, Passport, etc), written on it at the time of purchase. Any ticket without this information will be invalid.

You can choose between two zones:
  • Zona A, which practically coincides with de City of Madrid, were you can use all public transport services included in this zone (Metro, EMT Buses and Suburban Trains).
  • Zona T, which covers all public transport services in the Madrid Region, plus their extensions to Guadalajara and Toledo (Metro, EMT Buses, Regular Passenger Public Transport by road, Suburban Trains, but not the Regional Trains).

Fares from Octtober 1st. of 2006:

  1 day 2 days 3 days 5 days 7 days
Zona A 3,80 € 6,80 € 9,00 € 14,20 € 19,80 €
Zona T 7,60 € 13,60 € 18,10 € 28,20 € 39,60 €

TRAIN

There are two principal train stations in Madrid: Atocha and Chamartín. Both provide service for long distance and Cercanías (commuter) trains. Atocha is used for most destinations to the south and west of the country, the high speed AVE trains which travel to Cordoba and Sevilla and also serves as the hub of the Cercanías local train network. Chamartín serves as the station for trains headed east and north. Many trains stop at both stations, so you can often chose whichever is most convenient. Keep in mind that Atocha is closer to the city center. Tickets and schedules can be obtained in the train stations, the RENFE (Spanish national railway) office on calle Alcalá, or from a travel agent.

Cercanías (greater Madrid light railway) is a commuter train service that travels to the outskirts of Madrid and beyond. Cercanías stations are underground near the city center but above ground further out. They can be recognized by the rotated white on red 'C' as shown here in the icon.

These trains are comfortable and punctual. They are not too crowded except at rush hours, are heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer. Price varies by distance,  starting at 1,10 €.

Timetables, prices and other information can be obtained (in Spanish) at the following telephone number: 902 24 02 02 . Click here to take a look to the "Cercanias" network map.
