The Realverse

On March 13th 2024, Pablo Pérez (Nokia eXtended Reality Lab) delivered a talk entitled "The Realverse – challenges in XR communications" to the graduate students enrolled in the Master of Science in Telecommunication Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Talk's outline:

1. The Realverse Vision
2. Foundations of the Realverse
3. Immersive Telepresence
4. Embodied Interaction
5. The QoE Valley
6. The Incluverse
7. Futureverses

Pablo began his speech stating that a few years after the impactful announcement of the Metaverse strategy by Meta, which popularized the term, and a few weeks after the commercial reach of Apple Vision Pro, extended reality is still an uncertain promise. His talk presented the Realverse, a vision of how extended reality can be used to help people communicate. This human-centric approach requires a strong support from the underlying communication network. In the talk he explored the connection between the human factors and the technology, and we will show a few examples of how the Realverse is being researched and prototyped within Nokia Extended Reality Lab. The master's students greatly appreciated his speech. After the talk, interesting questions and keen remarks arose.
